Vodafone Ghana & MEST Kickoff ‘Using the Power of Technology to Simplify Lives’ Hackathon

MEST | Wednesday, February 4th, 2015

Vodafone Ghana & MEST are proud to kickoff a two-day hackathon tomorrow (February 5), which will focus on the theme, Using the Power of Technology to Simplify Lives and will serve as a platform for creating solutions that will address everyday issues and pain points.

It’s open to software developers, workers, students, entrepreneurs and freelancers with ideas or solutions that respond to convenience and making life simpler for Ghanaians. Examples of potential things they’ll be hacking toward include:

  • Transportation and/or traffic management and information
  • Entertainment (music, movies, content)
  • Lifestyle (fashion, sports, food, social media)
  • Your home: (childcare and safety, domestic help, work, and assistance)
  • Alerting systems (accidents, incidents, weather)

Vodafone Ghana & MEST aim to use this platform to raise awareness and, most importantly, provide answers that will become benchmarks in simplifying lives; leading to consistent economic emancipation for the average Ghanaian.

Across the globe, hackathons have become incomparable platforms in providing workable solutions. Statistics available from about a year ago indicates that over 10,000 startups have launched at hackathons worldwide. Hackathons provide avenues for technological innovators and software developers to collaborate on various projects to address social needs.

Commenting ahead of the event, Julius Owusu-Kyerematen, Head of Strategy and Innovation at Vodafone Ghana said:

“As a leading communications solutions provider, we recognize our power in driving change in society. This realization has seen us spearhead a host of useful initiatives to ensure that our customers and communities feel empowered on our platform. We see this hackathon as an extension of this commitment to innovation and we are certain that it will generate the desired results.”

Added Ekua Odoom, Managing Director at MEST, “Vodafone continues to be a true tech leader in Ghana and we’re elated to partner with them in a way that plays to both of our organizations respective strengths. West Africa needs this kind of support for budding entrepreneurs to solve real-world, local problems through technology. We’re happy to be able to team up with Vodafone and provide such a platform.”

We, for one, are excited to see which innovative ideas spring forward! Watch this space for updates and follow us on Twitter @MESTghana to join in on the action.
