The Dropifi 2014 Online Shopper Report [INFOGRAPHIC]

MEST portfolio company and 500 Startups-backed Dropifi, the customer service solution for online merchants, has aggregated over half a million data points to create a report on the habits and profiles of online shoppers. Dropifi services over 18,000 small businesses on Shopify, Magento, WordPress, Wix, Prestashop, and Tictail (with Volusion and Bigcommerce on the way), providing intelligence on store visitors through their smart contact widget.

The infographic report uses those analytics to provide key insights for online business owners, including insights on:

  • AGE: According to our research, millennials (24-32) are the most frequent visitors to e-commerce stores and websites. The good news for online merchants? An Accenture study priced the annual millennial buying power at $600 billion.
  • LOCATION: After the usual suspects (US, UK, Canda, Australia), Dropifi found that shopper interests are growing in Southeast Asia and select parts of Africa by tracking their messages to online merchants. The World Trade Organization identifies this as a result of the growing mobile phone and internet penetration in these emerging markets; projections from UBS and McKinsey place the e-commerce markets in Southeast Asia at $35bn by 2020 and Africa at $75bn by 2025.
  • GENDER: Of those men and women who make contact with the shops, women are twice as likely to leave positive comments, but also twice as likely to leave negative comments.
  • SHOPPING PLATFORM: After comparing a number of hosting platforms against each other, we found that 1) Shopify shoppers are least likely to contact store owners with comments or questions, while 2) Wix shoppers are 2.6x more likely to be in touch.
